The colossal power of sport is something we often talk about on this blog, and it is a key tenet of our core beliefs and values. Sport is a universal language that has has the power to unify, heal, empower and so much more. Its benefits go way over and above simply the sport itself, and it should be inclusive of all abilities, backgrounds and identities. To that end, the provision of disability sport is vital.

In this country, around one in five people have a disability or long-standing illness, and disabled people are twice as likely to be physically inactive.

If these disparities are not urgently addressed, the inequalities that already exist for disabled people will only increase.

Make your club inclusive to disabled people

It would be churlish to ignore or deny the fact that many grassroots clubs, across all sports, are looking for ways to increase membership and participation. With a fifth of the population disabled or suffering a long-term health condition, by not being inclusive to those disabled people, you are essentially ruling out a large chunk of the population who could be bringing their skills, energy and enthusiasm to your club.

Being inclusive may not necessarily mean running fully inclusive sessions for all members to attend – it could be about tailoring some sessions or introducing genuinely bespoke sessions. You can include disabled people in a number of ways, and for an in-depth look at making your club more inclusive for disabled people, check out the fantastic Inclusion Club Hub from Activity Alliance (formerly EFDS / English Federation of Disability Sport). We’d strongly recommend your club took advantage of the wealth of resources, ideas and methods to enable your club to be the best it can be and include disabled people in your activities.
