In early August, Kudos teamed up with international showjumper Joe Stockdale. The move represents a bold step forward in equestrianism teamwear – with an emphasis on creating a strong and identifiable brand and image, while showcasing and promoting the range of sponsors who put so much into the sport.
So who are Team Stockdale, and why is it such an honour for everyone at Kudos to be partnered with them?
The late, great Tim Stockdale
The Stockdale story began with Tim, who rose from humble beginnings in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, to represent Great Britain for the first time in 1988, aged 24.
Tim went on to enjoy an illustrious career in showjumping, representing GB on more than fifty Nations Cup teams – as well as the World Equestrian Games in 2002 and the European Championships in 2009. He was also the highest placed Brit at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, narrowly missing out on a medal in 4th place.
And on home turf in 2010, Tim won the King George V Gold Cup, at Hickstead’s Royal International Horse Show, with Kalico Bay.
To many on the outside, the world of showjumping might look a bit like a glamorous fancy dress party, but behind the scenes there’s endless early mornings, muck, mud and a whole lot of graft. Tim Stockdale’s life was no different – a struggle exacerbated by breaking nearly every bone in his body in his rise to the sport’s elite.
Battered, bruised but never deterred, Tim always passionately sought to raise the profile of the sport. With an ever-increasing presence in the media, Tim wound up featuring in Channel 4 documentaries, Sport Relief – and in turn raising the sport’s profile as he had always wanted – and presenting major horse shows alongside the much-loved Clare Balding.
In 2018, Tim tragically passed away aged just 54 following a short illness. It was a devastatingly cruel loss for Tim’s family and friends, and a huge loss to the sport. His former TV sidekick paid Tim a glowing tribute, saying:
This is so sad. Tim was a brilliant show jumper, a great coach, a wonderful team mate on the TV, a warm, funny and hugely supportive human being. I feel so lucky to have known him. Love and hugs to all his family who will miss him so much. Clare balding
The Tim Stockdale Foundation
In Tim’s memory, his family created the Tim Stockdale Foundation, a charity established to support young sporting ambition, nurturing talent in any and every sport – not just equestrianism – where an extra helping financial hand could turn children into champions. It is just a part of the wonderful legacy Tim left behind.
Joe Stockdale – a rising star
Another of Tim’s proud legacies are his sons Mark, a prodigious young golfer, and Joseph, now a rising star on the showjumping scene in his own right.
Joe shares so many of his father’s qualities – amiable, likeable, and hugely talented. Initially, showjumping had to take a back seat to cricket, as Joe made great strides for Northants County Cricket Club, rising through the ranks from the age of 11 to play for the club’s second XI, with a professional career looking a racing certainty.
After switching sports, Joe then duly rose through the showjumping ranks to represent his country as part of the Junior Nations Cup squad 2017, the Young Rider Nations Cup and European team 2019 – and, on the very day our partnership with Team Stockdale was announced, Joe was selected to represent Great Britain in the FEI Nations Cup.
His father would have been immensely proud, and it was a wonderfully fitting way to round off what is merely the latest chapter in the Stockdale’s story. With Joe on the up and up, it is clear the story is far, far from over – and we are absolutely thrilled to be on board with Joe and the rest of the team for the journey from here on in.
