Today (April 6th) is the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) – an annual celebration of the power of sport to drive social change, community development and to foster peace and understanding.

Forging a link to the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, 6th April (the opening day of those first Games) was declared the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace by the United Nations (UN) in 2013, and has been celebrated every year since 2014.

You might be wondering what is the point of these annual international days. Established and implemented by the UN, they are intended to raise awareness on global issues, to remember and commemorate past events and to celebrate culture, nature and world heritage. On many of them, activities and celebrations take place around the world. For some, simply raising awareness is the order of the day – and we’re never shy to shout about the myriad of virtues and benefits of sport. It drives what we do, and it underpins our love for sport.

The about us section on our website says:

KUDOS’s passion is to encourage all types of people to be actively involved in sport. As well as manufacturing high quality made to order sports kit, we want people to really get the benefits of sport both physically and mentally, whilst understanding how powerful sport can be, at whatever level, in generating confidence, responsibility, humility, discipline and teamwork

One of sport’s most undervalued benefits is how it can improve self-esteem, self-confidence and all manner of aspects of our well-being – as well as helping communities and society more broadly.

Physical inactivity leads every year to an estimated 3.2 million deaths. Sedentary lifestyles are on the rise, and this surely demands renewed commitment and resources from everyone associated with sport– authorities, coaches, players, parents, kit suppliers, everyone, to ensure policies and attitudes are changed.

Sport is for everyone – regardless of colour, creed, religion, sexual orientation or anything else. There is no greater force for good, so let’s celebrate the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace and let it mark the start of a renewed effort to get as many people active as possible.
