The winner of our latest kit giveaway was Jo Heath of Newton Rigg College Netball team.

Newton Rigg College, based in Penrith on the edge of the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, is predominantly an agricultural college but it hosts a range of other courses in sport, outdoor adventure and loads more.

A delighted Jo told us:

Our sports facilities are small, but we have outdoor space, and those limitations have not stopped us enjoying some good results in recent years.

We take part in inter-college competitions – last year at the Lakes College Cumbrian colleges competition Newton Rigg were winners in netball, dodgeball, rugby and athletics, and came second in badminton. We have also done well in the past two years in north west handball competitions, first place in 2018, and we came second just recently to Blackburn College. We have a football team that plays regularly and is close to the top of the table, and when we have been successful in netball too. JO HEATH, NEWTON RIGG COLLEGE NETBALL TEAM

The last few years have seen exponential growth in women’s sport, and the college is doing its bit to engage as many women as possible in sport, as well as providing opportunities for mixed gender sport.

Last year netball, and the other team sports, were done as enrichment activities on Wednesday afternoons – and enjoyed by both male and female students. We have also looked at introducing korfball competitively so we can have a mixed gender team sport.

It’s vital that more schools and colleges place real emphasis on sport as a force for good, both physically and mentally, and Newton Rigg appear to be fully invested in this idea.

We plan on engaging more people in enrichment and trying to improve physical activity and mental well-being, and are hoping to expand and take part in a higher netball league this September. It’s a game our students enjoy and we are lucky to have some talented players who would like to develop further, and undertake some netball coaching qualifications.

We believe sport, Uniformed Public Services and Outdoor Adventure have so many opportunities for personal development and social skills – and provides a better experience and sense of belonging at college. We would love to see our students invested in more in terms of kit, facilities and further opportunities for fixtures. So we are grateful of winning this competition, and are looking forward to competing and showing off the new kit.

We’re currently working with Jo and the team to create a bespoke team kit that they can all be proud of. Sport, and harnessing its immense power, is our passion and we’re delighted to be working alongside people that share those values.
