Bouncing back from typical grassroots difficulties
Anyone connected to grassroots sport and amateur clubs will be well aware of the myriad challenges faced by clubs and their volunteers. Gloucester All Blues are no different, and the club has faced – and staved off – a series of difficulties over the last decade and more.
The floods of summer 2007 submerged parts of their ground and clubhouse, and since then the club has faced lengthy spells of inactivity, player shortages, several dalliances with financial ruin, and – just last September – had their two newly relaid pitches wrecked by a large group of travellers that had set up camp complete with horses and chickens.
But a bold rethink from club manager Ralph Dangerfield has seen an influx of players, fans and cash – and now they’re set to receive 15 brand new custom-made KUDOS shirts after a stroke of luck in our Christmas giveaway.
Just a couple of years after nearly folding, the club has made plans for expansion into youth football and youth rugby, and we hope the new kit is well received and continues a run of better fortune for a club that once had the former England and British Lions blindside flanker Mike Teague on its books.
90 years old and counting
In December the All Blues held its 90th anniversary celebrations, raising £2000 in the process. Club manager Ralph Dangerfield told the local media at the time:
I got in contact with old members and we had a game with the veterans. We had people travel from all over and 97 ex-members turned up. A 96-year-old came. He had been there at the opening of the club 90 years ago. It was fantastic. We used the £2,000 on simple things like soap dispensers in the clubhouse, so we could hire it out. After our first booking we got a good online review. It has all been word of mouth. We have had some weddings and we’ve got a few more booked for next year. Club Manager Ralph Dangerfield
Every little helps with grassroots clubs. We’re looking forward to working with the All Blues to create a first class kit as they move onwards and upwards, and we’ll be speaking at length with the club once the kit is with them.
