The nights are drawing in, the temperatures are plummeting and suddenly sporting activity doesn’t seem quite so appealing. For many of us, fair weather sport is the order of the day and, coupled with perfectly acceptable gluttony over the festive period, this means our fitness can slide over the winter – often undoing months of good work. With that in mind, here are a few ideas for keeping fit over the winter.

A much underrated and overlooked form of exercise. Wrapping up for a good old winter walk can truly warm the cockles, and in the UK we’re blessed to be never too far from the countryside. Walking is free, it improves the body’s cardiovascular system, is good for muscle endurance and because it is low impact it comes with a very low risk of injury. The more briskly you walk, the more calories you will burn. Head out with the kids or a group of friends with the promise of a country pub reward at the end of your route.

Squash is an indoor sport played at breakneck speed that works upper body, explosiveness, endurance, and core strength. In an average hour-long game you will burn around 1,000 calories – around 200 more calories burned in an hour of football. Find your local squash court here.

It’s always tempting to stay in the house over the winter, but going swimming is a great and inexpensive way to get off the sofa, get out of the house and stay active and warm. Swimming provides a full body workout – arguably the best you can get. Many baths now have saunas and steam rooms – so you can really pamper yourself in the warmth after your workout in the pool.

Many city centres now open temporary ice-skating rinks over Christmas, and it has become synonymous with the festive season. Ice skating provides a surprisingly aerobic workout, and it’s very sociable. If the weather isn’t good you can always find an indoor rink and take the family.
