The recent Girls Football Week was marked by a number of initiatives and announcements – one of which was the launch of a great new scheme offering regular coaching sessions that will deliver first class football training for girls across the UK.

Aiming to build on the recent momentum gathered by the women’s game, and encourage even more girls into the game, the She Can Play coaching sessions have been tailored specifically for girls aged between 5-16 years old – of all abilities – and will be delivered by FA qualified coaches in a welcoming and fun environment led by FA qualified coaches. A number of the coaches represented clubs in the Women’s Premier League and Super League.

Women’s and girls’ football has made great strides lately, and in 2017 in particular. As well as the success of the Lionesses on the international stage, substantially more opportunities to play are now afforded to women and girls. Last season over 147,000 female players competed in affiliated league and cup competitions – a figure which has risen from just 10,400 in 1993 when records began.

Taking elite coaching for girls nationwide

In 2016, Kat Clifton led the ‘She Can Play’ women’s team to the final of the FA People’s Cup – a free five-a-side knockout competition open to all abilities. Her team were unbeaten through the regional rounds, before losing in the final in Sheffield. Kat – who played for Spurs, West Ham and Crystal Palace ladies – is the founder of She Can Play and her mission is unequivocally clear.

She Can Play has had a meteoric rise since the success of our team reaching the final of the FA People’s Cup in 2016. Since then we have become official partners of Sport England’s ‘This Girl Can’ campaign and delivered multiple sessions for young girls wanting to get into football. The partnership with PlayFootball represents the next stage of this journey, enabling us to develop our coaching offering and take it nationwide. kat clifton, founder of she can play

The programme kicks off in early 2018 and will be run through 16 PlayFootball centres around the UK in London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Nottingham, Blackpool, Bury, Colchester, Gillingham, Luton, Portsmouth, Preston, Romford, Southend, Swansea, Swindon and York.

Parents are encouraged to register their interest and can do so here.
