It is now a matter of scientific fact that physical activity boosts mental health. Many of us are well-intentioned when it comes to getting fit(ter), but so many facets of modern life tend to get in the way. Once you’ve broken the ice, however, most people find physical activity extremely rewarding and addictive. Getting started is the hardest part, which is why we think #17MinutesForMe – a new scheme from England Athletics – is such a good idea.

Activities in your own time and at your own pace

#17MinutesForMe is a trailblazing new collaboration between England Athletics and Mind, bringing together mental and physical health. Three times a week for 8 weeks, a diverse group of leaders (i.e. influencers, coaches, athletes and trainers) will send you a set of flexible, 17-minute activities – straight to your inbox. You choose when and where you undertake the activities, and there are also accessible, seated versions. And if you miss a few it really doesn’t matter. It is all about getting active at your pace, in your time.

#17MinutesForMe has been developed using learning and research from Mind’s Get Set to Go programme – with local Minds supporting in the development and design of the challenge.

Participants sign up via email on the website. From 3 July, you will receive 3 emails per week from an influencer including Mind ambassadors Matt Johnson, Anna Williamson as well as local Mind volunteers, with activity challenges laid out.

Activities are simple and inclusive and include progressions for those who want them.

Follow it up by joining a local sports club

Once the 8 week plan is over, you will almost certainly have become addicted to the buzz and the rewards gleaned from the activities. That’s the point at which you could consider joining a local sports club, and enjoying the myriad of benefits – both physical and mental – that that can bring.

Registrations can be taken throughout the challenge, giving people the option to join when they want throughout the summer. Further information will be available from the website or alternatively you can contact
