Kicking off today, Women’s Sport Week 2017 is a celebratory campaign designed to encourage more women to try out a new sport or physical activity. Highlighting the amazing achievements of our female athletes, coaches and volunteers, it coincides with a big year for elite women’s sport – including the Women’s Cricket and Rugby World Cups, as well as the Women’s European Football and Hockey championships.

Women’s Sport Week aims to raise awareness of the many and varied opportunities for women and girls to take part in sport as well as highlighting the vital contribution women make to the sports industry. With our partners, Women in Sport wants to reach out to the whole community – women and men, girls and boys – and encourage everyone to join in, take part and enjoy this fantastic summer of women’s sport. Mark Sampson – manager of the England women’s football team and patron of Women In Sport

Women’s Sport Week partners and supporters include Women in Sport, BBC Sport, Sky Sports, Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Sport England as well as sport’s National Governing Bodies, including British Rowing.

Women’s sport is doing a good job in highlighting disparities with men’s sport, exemplified by the recent news that the gender prize money gap is narrowing – but the disparities run deeper than prize money at elite level, and it is vital that we maintain and even step up our efforts to keep driving women’s sport forward.

To help celebrate Women’s Sport Week, you are encouraged to join in by wearing your favourite sports kit to work on Friday 23 June. Clear it with your employer, share your photos on social media and Women in Sport will share their favourites.
