A brand new state-of-the-art triathlon facility has opened at the University of Leeds, serving both elite athletes and newcomers to the sport.

The Brownlee Centre

The £5m Brownlee Centre – named, of course, after Alistair and Jonny, two of Great Britain’s most successful Olympians – boasts a one mile cycle track (one of the longest in the country) and a strength and conditioning training suite, alongside physiotherapy and medical services. It is the UK’s first purpose-built triathlon training base and brings genuinely world class facilities to the north of England.

The cycling track provides a traffic-free environment in which to practice, a safe place for people not yet confident enough to ride on the road.

World class facilities for both elite athletes and Joe Public alike

Cycling clubs in the area are already flocking to use the site, and there is a full programme of activity including ‘pay and pedal’ sessions and HSBC Breeze Rides for women and girls. Bikes for children and adults are available to hire, along with hand cycles, trikes and tandems for use by riders with disabilities. It is this parity of esteem for both elite athletes and grassroots participants that makes the Brownlee Centre such an attractive facility, backed up by former world triathlon champ and Rio 2016 silver medallist Jonny Brownlee.

This centre and circuit will inspire everyone, from beginners through to elite athletes. Jonny Brownlee

The cycle circuit is open year-round for external group hire including cycling events, duathlons, running events, corporate team building activities and private training sessions. It has a range of booking options to suit everybody, including bike hire, and prices are pleasingly affordable – groups such as schools can book for just £50 an hour while adults will pay just £5 with kids at a £2.50. The circuit opened to the public on 2 May, with a variety of sessions open for all abilities.
