For as long as any of us can remember, local sports clubs have remained a key part of community life and deserve all the support they can get. Some sports clubs are able to function entirely self-sufficiently, but most still require financial assistance and investment from various bodies to continue providing for their members and local community.

Online assistance

It is crucial local clubs are kept afloat, which is why Sport England runs a one stop shop called Club Matters designed for sports clubs. Interactive guidance, online modules, toolkits and templates are all available to start building a brighter future for your sports club.

The Club Matters website features a comprehensive guide to building and running a sustainable sports clubs. With sub-sections on club finance, club management, starting a club and much more, every base is covered from budgeting to deployment of volunteers and development plans.

Club Matters workshops provide a chance for you to come together face-to-face with other sports clubs, and an expert tutor, to learn more about the various facets of running a sports club. They are for groups of at least 4 clubs, last around 2 hours and build on the content of the available online resources.

Workshops are provided on the following topics:

  • Understanding your club finances
  • Understanding the options for club structures
  • Developing a marketing strategy
  • Developing a business plan
  • Understanding the tax requirements for your club people
  • Funded by Sport England, our workshops are free to attend and open to anyone involved in a community sports club.

Check out the workshop schedule to see if there’s a workshop near you. If the workshop you want isn’t listed, or there isn’t one in your local area, get in touch with your National Governing Body or County Sports Partnership and ask if they can organise one in your area.
