Following a successful pilot in 2016, National Schools Snowsport Week is back for 2017. Delivered by Snowsport England’s Youth Development Committee, the initiative offer free or heavily discounted activities and aims to increase participation in snowsports.

The 2016 pilot saw 21 slopes across England engage 149 schools and 1066 schoolchildren. For most it was their first time on skis or a snowboard, while others with experience already under their belt sought to expand on their skill-set by trying other disciplines such as racing or skicross.

National Schools Snowsport Week can be just the start

After the week – held between Monday 24th – Sunday 30th April – they will encourage schools to continue participating through a variety of programmes hosted at their local facility.

This year, twenty slopes across the country will offer taster ski and snowboard sessions as part of the Snowsport England initiative.

GB Olympic snowboarder Aimee Fuller said:

National Schools Snowsport Week is a great way to give young people who may not have considered skiing or snowboarding before the chance to give them a go. Both sports have so much to give socially and are a great way to stay active.

Another ambassador for the week is Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards. The enthusiastic ski jumper competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics and went on to become a typically British national hero, with a film about his story released last year.

I started skiing when I was 13 and have lived and breathed it for my whole life. Trust me, it is worth giving it a go and having fun with your friends. Speak to your teacher and get them to sign your school up to National Schools Snowsport Week.

If you fancy getting involved, find your nearest and give it a go!  All schools regardless of type or size can bring a group or class of pupils, and you can find out more here.
