Enjoyment comes first, but every parent of a child involved in sport wants to see them do well. This summer a 13 year old gymnast, Libby Roebuck, became a world gymnastics champion. In this guest blog, Libby’s Mum, Shelley, describes their journey from dreamer to champion…

Being a parent of a sporty little girl with big dreams can be quite a test. Libby is 13 years old and is a keen gymnast.

Our journey into the world of gymnastics started when she was 10, at a local club which Libby attends once a week along with dance, athletics, ballet and her horse riding! She has a busier social diary than both her parents. Along with juggling work and school, she keeps us extremely busy!

She was just 11 when she took part in her first local recreational gymnastic competition. She did well, bringing home a selection of medals from her floor routine and the vault.

Libby joined a local club

She enjoyed it so much that she was offered extra training at her local club, Active Tameside. She was allowed to train 6 hours per week. Any more and she would have to join the Elite Team which trains a minimum of 13 hours a week. We decided this was to much for her during her transition to high school.

Onwards and upwards for our little star! She competes once a month at a selection of competitions throughout the UK along with her other fellow team mates from Active Tameside. Supported by her coach Alan and Olivia, the Active Tameside girls were becoming regulars at the UK Gymnastic Competitions.

Representing Active Tameside are, Libby, Erin, Annabelle and Ellie-Jay. They are so supportive of each other. Real team spirit.

Their competing took a turn for the better when the girls were invited to compete at a qualifying competitions at Milton Keynes for the USAIGC World Championships. The girls made all parents extremely proud, bringing home gold medals and scoring highly enough to give them the chance to compete in Florida.

Off to Orlando for the World Championships!

With regular parent and coaches meetings and several fundraising events later, the girls raised a massive £9000 to help fund their trip competing with children from all over the world.

With flight and accommodation booked, team kit was next on the girls list. They designed their own tracksuits, which KUDOS made to perfection.

Off they went to Orlando in July of this year.

It was a nail-biting experience with hundreds of competitors taking their places on the floor, bar, beam and vault.

The girls were amazing and represented the UK with complete pride! They certainly looked the part with many comments on how smart they looked!

They completed all apparatus and medals were duly secured!

A dream come true

Libby’s ability to be so consistent on all four apparatus secured her the title of All-Around World Champion for her age group. It was very emotional moment for all involved, especially her coach! It was certainly a proud mum and dad moment when you see your little girl crowned with a gold medal. It is a memory that will last forever! When a child has dream that she is going to be a gymnast, with supportive parents, a good coach, dreams really can come true!

Thank you KUDOS, for all your support and hard work. Our girls looked amazing thanks to you!
