Spirit of 2012 – the charitable organisation founded on the back of the immense enthusiasm and momentum created by the London 2012 Olympic games – has launched the Sport Challenge Fund, offering a fantastic opportunity for projects and sports clubs that opens up sport or physical activity to under-represented groups. Applications are now being invited from organisations and clubs whose focus includes improving wellbeing, challenging and changing perceptions towards disability and impairment, and decreasing social isolation.

Using Sport to Unite People

It is well established that sport and physical activity boosts mental health, wellbeing and can connect people and communities – having a hugely positive effect on loneliness and issues around social isolation. However, sport participation demographics often fail to reflect evenly the demographics of the country, or even of the communities in which sport is played.

The Spirit of 2012 Sport Challenge Fund will award a whopping £200,000 to a single project in Wales or England that brings new people together to enjoy being physically active. An essential element of this will be including time for social contact – clubs that marry sporting activity with opportunities to socialise. Research shows that health and happiness are inextricably linked.

Does your club fit the bill?

Preference will be for applications that not only blend sport and social contact, but those which can demonstrate a focus on groups not usually targeted with the provision of sporting and physical activity – including but not limited to disabled people, those with long-term health conditions or perhaps an under-represented ethnic group or gender. Spirit of 2012’s Sport Challenge Fund seeks to leave a legacy of happier and healthier individuals and communities.

If you think your club fits the bill, you should submit an expression of interest before 9am on 19 February, 2018, and you can do that here.
