The drive to help people get active and playing sport never stops, particularly when it comes to young people and children. Some people do come to sport later in life, but for most the seeds are sown at school, and it is vital we all enable and empower schools to deliver as wide-ranging a sports programme as possible.

ENSHRINING CRICKET’S FUTURE

Chance to Shine is a national charity on a mission to spread the power of cricket throughout schools and communities. By giving school age kids the opportunity to play cricket – and learn through cricket – they not only enshrine the future of the game but help children develop in a number of ways.

Over the last decade or so, there has been a quite dramatic decline in state-educated players in the England team. Around 7% of British kids are privately educated, yet the figure in the England cricket team has floated around the 70% mark. Joe Root, Jimmy Anderson and Ben Stokes have become exceptions to the rule. Provision of cricket in state schools has fallen away, and it is viewed by some as the preserve of the posh. It is vital that this misconception is buried and cricket’s reach is widened.

FREE CRICKET RESOURCES

Developed alongside the Youth Sport Trust, Chance To Shine’s full programme of support for schools and teachers includes a whole host of FREE resources. The programme will help pupils develop their physical, numeracy and literacy skills – as well as supporting the development of important character traits.

Tools such as coaching cards, which can be downloaded here, empower teachers to deliver the cricket sessions. The new resources will help teachers to bring cricket into the classroom and use the sport to engage with pupils beyond just PE lessons. The resources will be available to all free of charge via a new teachers’ web portal. In addition, there will be opportunities to receive free goodies if you become a teacher ambassador and help to spread the power of cricket!

The resources will be available for the 2017/18 academic year, starting this September. If you wish to be kept up to date with the resources, and sign up to the portal, click here and help deliver this fantastic programme.
