We gave away 15 bespoke, custom made shirts after Christmas in ‘The Big KUDOS Kit Giveaway’. The competition was open to anybody but the prize was always likely going to be won by someone representing a sports club – we just didn’t know who and what sport that might be. When it transpired Neil Welsh of Carnmoney Ladies FC was the lucky winner, we were particularly pleased – for Carnmoney Ladies FC is an all-female football club, the only one in the vicinity in which they compete. We love to support all grassroots sport and we especially love to champion unique, different and progressive ways of getting more people playing sport.
Carnmoney Ladies FC was formed in August 2011, and in just five and a half years the club has grown sufficiently to sustain teams at all age groups from under 7s right through to under 19s – plus a successful senior team and a recently formed over 30s team.
Neil told us:
Carnmoney Ladies are unique over here in that we are the only all female football club. Most girls teams run alongside, or at least with the support of, an established mens/boys club so we feel that being able to compete at the highest level of girls football in Northern Ireland is quite the achievement.
The success of the senior team, who won their league for the past two seasons, has filtered right down through the club.
The under 15 squad has a spine of girls who have been with the club from the first year and who have played together since the age of 9 or 10 (Ellie, Rhiannon, Caitlin, Keely, Lauren, Lucy and Anneli). When the national under 15 girls league was formed last summer Carnmoney took their place alongside big names in Northern Ireland such as Linfield, Crusaders and Glentoran. While the step up has been a steep learning curve for our girls it is great to see them performing as one of the top 8 teams in the country, and three of the girls have earned selection in the Northern Ireland Elite squad.
Over the winter break the 11-a-side football was replaced with an indoor five-a-side Futsal competition, and two Carnmoney sides were entered from the under 15 squad – one of which finished top of their league with a 100% record to qualify for the national quarter finals, where they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by last year’s winners. The club’s consistency of approach doubtless stands the girls in good stead as they progress through the age groups.
The club has a training philosophy which is consistent throughout all age groups and this means every summer the girls move up to the next level with a smooth transition. The 2004 squad will be playing alongside the 2003 girls from the summer onwards.
No amateur sports club can survive without the backing of sponsors, volunteers and parents. Carnmoney is no different and Neil is quick to give credit where it is due.
The club is lucky to have the support of the IFA, Crown Paints (who sponsor the club at every level) many parents, the local council.
Neil’s stylish design (above) has been submitted and the 15 shirts will soon be winging their way to the club. We’re already looking forward seeing the team in their brand new kit, we’re proud to be associated with such a progressive club and would like to wish them all the very best for the future.
